Moss Pier

Short notes about small harbours, tides and walking the coast.

Low water at the old slipway

The slipway only shows its lower stones for about an hour either side of a spring low. Worth checking the tide table first, because the walk back along the wall gets wet quickly once the water turns.

Why the north pier stays green

The north side gets almost no direct sun and catches spray most of the year, so the moss never dries out. The south side of the same pier is bare stone. A small thing, but it makes the two walls look like different buildings.

A slow walk to the lighthouse

Four kilometres along the shingle, nothing difficult. Good boots help more than you would expect, and the cafe at the far end closes earlier than its sign says.
